WHAT IS MACHU PICCHU?

  • Machu Picchi ia an old Incan city in Peru, South America at about 13 S, 72 W
  • It is known as the "Lost City"
  • It is called that because it was abandoned 100 years after its construction

WHY IS IT "LOST"?

  • It was abandoned about 100 years after it's construction
  • Abandoned around the time the Spanish began their conquest of the pre-Colombian civilization
  • But there is little evidence the conquistadors ever attacked the city

WHAT KIND OF STRUCTURES ARE IN MACHU PICCHU?

  • Machu Picchu's most famous structures include the Temple Of The Sun and the Inihuatana stone
  • The Inihuatana stone is a granite rock that is believed to have been used as a solar clock
  • The Temple of the Sun has a large rock in the center that light from the summer solstice sun hits from one of the many temple windows, indicating an alignment between the sun, rock, and window,
  • There are also palaces, storage rooms, and about 150 houses in the city
  • Machu Picchu has become a home for many endangered animals including Ocelots, Pampas cats, Long-tailed weasels, and many others since it was abandoned

WHO DISCOVERED MACHU PICCHU?

  • Machu Picchu was discovered in 1911 by an archeologist named Hiram Bingham
