DEFINITION-

  • A congenital crack in the midline of the hard palate,often associated with harelip

HISTORY

DISCOVERED IN 390B.C

THE CAUSE OF IT.

  • Problems with genes passed done from parents
  • Drugs
  • Viruses
  • Or toxins

PREVENTIONS

  • It cant be prevented.

TREATMENT

  • Surgery at 12months of age.

HOW COMMON IT IS

  • One or two in every one thousand babies in the u.s

FACTS

  • Cleft lip happens if the tissue that makes up the lip does not join before birth
  • Also have a chance of getting cleft lip
  • Often have problems with feeding and talking
  • Might have ear infections, hearing loss, and problems with their teeth
  • Cleft lip surgery must be done before 12months of age.

CHALLENGES AT BIRTH

  • Feeding and talking.

  • Ear infections, hearing loss, and problems with teeth.

HOW TO PREPARE

  • Take prenatal vitamins, consider genetic counseling.

  • I would do everything i could to make sure they live a happy normal life.
