ATOMIC THEORY TIMELINE

BY KADEN BROWN, TONY DO, AND ARIANE HAMMOND

J. J. Thomson

  • Joseph John Thomson was born on December 1856 in Cheetham Hill, near Manchester, UK.
  • He attended Owens College in Manchester.
  • He then married one of his students, Rose Paget in 1892.
  • Rose and J.J. had two children - a son and a daughter. His son won a Nobel Peace Prize for Physics.
  • J.J. Thomson died on August 30, 1940 in Cambridge.

J.J. experiments with gases. His 1897 experiment revealed that electrons were a part of atoms and showed that they were able to measure voltage.

Plum Pudding Model

The atomic model invented by J.J. Thomson was composed of electrons surrounded by a soup of positive charge to balance the electrons' negative charge.
