  • Elizabeth Bishop was born on 8 February 1911 in Worecester, Massachusetts.

FAMILY

  • Bishops Father William passed before her first birthday.
  • Her mother Gertrude suffered from nervous collapses and was admitted to a mental hospital
  • when Elizabeth was just five years old.

CHILDHOOD

  • From the ages of three to five she lived with her Mother's parents in Great Village, Nova Scotia.
  • Then she was taken in by her Father's family, in Worcester and Boston.

EDUCATION

  • She attended Walnut Hill School near Boston during her high school years,
  • followed by four years at Vassar.
  • Having briefly considered a career in medicine, Bishop chose poetry with the
  • guidance of her friend Marianne Moore, a poet.

PERSONAL LIFE

  • Robert Lowell was a lifelong friend.
  • Suffered from eczema, asthma, St. Vitus's dance, and nervous ailments

FAMOUS WORKS

  • Her first book 'North and South' with themes of geography and landscape, human connection with the natural world
