ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Historical Statement
1) Dr. Alois Alzheimer discovered Alzheimer's disease

2) German physician Alois Alzheimer a pioneer in linking symptoms to microscopic brain changes, describes the haunting case of August D., a patient who had profound memory loss, unfounded suspicions about her family, and other worsening psychological change. In her brain at autopsy, he saw dramatic shrinkage and abnormal deposits in and around nerve cells.

3) It was discovered in a patient during an autopsy after her death.

CAUSES

  • It is not contagious or inherited, its somethings that most elderly people get over 65 years old
  • (PSI) a critical component which is linked to autosmal dominant familial. Alzheimer's disease (FAD).
  • Age # 1 factor, family history, genetics

Symptoms
1) Central Nervous System: loss of brain tissue, causes memory loss and learning. As it increases personality and mood are affected. Not been able to interact with environment, plan, rationalize, organization

2) Digestive System: Have difficulty eating without choking. Pneumonia remains a common cause of death among people with Alzheimers. Impaired sense of smell, and taste.

3) Neuromuscular System: lose ability to walk, and posture.
4) damage to proteins and other macromolecules
5) duration: none
6) lifestyle changes: getting around your home and daily life.

TREATMENTS

  • Cholinesterase inhibitors aricept, exelon, tazadyne (ognex)
  • Music therapy: familiar music, new tunes, tempo, skip commercials
  • Pet therapy: story telling or scrapbooking
  • Provide a balance diet with a variety of foods
  • Limit foods with high saturated fats and cholesteral, cut down on sugars, limit foods with high sodium

PREVENTIONS

  • Not smoking
  • Being physically and mentally active
  • Combating low education
  • Properly treating or preventing chronic disease and conditions
  • Examples: blood pressure, cholesteral, diabetes, obesity, and ect.
