WHAT HAPPENED TO WOMEN AFTER THE WAR?
Women were back to having pre-war "women's work"
Women also faced the assumption of "a woman's place is in the home."
Before this, many women had contributed to taking on a man's job
Men had now been returning from the war at this time
Women were back to having old jobs as nurses, teachers, etc.

WHAT HAPPENED TO AFRICAN-AMERICANS AFTER THE WAR?
Africans faced little change after the war
Racial conditions failed to improve significantly, such as race riots and lynchings
African-Americans had believed that they would be recognized for fighting in the war
"We saved it in France, and by the Great Jehovah, we will save it in the United States of America."-W.E.B Du Bois "Returning Soldiers"
However, many African Americans were brought into the army by military service

WHAT WAS THE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC?
Summer of 1918 a severe form of influenza appeared enexpectedly
This was known as either the "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe"
The outbreak began in spring 1918, mild at first but then grew severe in the summer
Began in Spain at first, then Germany, Hungary, France, and reached to the Atlantic and U.S.
It was known to kill more people than the war, at about 20 and 4o million people

WHAT WAS INFLATION?
Inflation- increase in prices(usually caused by war)
Caused by an increase in the nation's money supply
Demand was high, but supply was low
Workers had to abandon their jobs because of the shift
People hoarded goods, assuming prices would go up(caused shortages)

WHAT WAS THE RED SCARE?
Red Scare- nation wide fear of communists, anarchists, socialists, etc
Palmer Raids- mass arrests of communists and anarchists
Named after US General Alexander Mitchell Palmer
Started the belief that communists were responsible for American social issues
Communists and anarchists were held without trial

WHAT WAS THE RED SCARE? (CONT.)
Bombs were mailed as threats to U.S. Officials by American anarchists
Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti- Italian immigrants, anarchists and socialists
Accused and arrested for the murder of two employees of a shoe warehouse
Sacco and Vanzetti maintained their innocence, but were found guilty
Both men were executed, but many protest today of their innocence and guilt
