DEMOGRAPHICS

  • Mars is the 2nd smallest planet in our solar system
  • 4th planet from the sun
  • It is commonly called the red planet because of the red glow it emits

COMPOSITION

  • Mars is very similar to earth in its composition
  • It has a core of mainly iron and sulfur and a mantle made of silicon
  • The crust is made of basalt and just enough iron oxide to make it red.
  • Atmosphere: Carbon Dioxide (95.3%) and Nitrogen (2.7%)
  • The rest of the atmosphere is a mixture of various gases

Untitled Slide

The red glow of mars comes from the oxidation of iron upon the surface.

SATELLITES

  • Mars has 2 natural satellites that orbit it.
  • Its two "moons" are also known as Phobos and Deimos
  • These moons are actually very small and more closely resemble asteroids
  • They are also made of the same material as asteroids.
  • (carbonaceous chondrite)

EARTH COMPARISON

  • Mars is about half the size of earth (2,106:3,959 radius in miles)
  • Mars' gravity is about 37.7% of that of Earth's
  • Mars has a rotation of 24 hours and 37 minutes (41 mins longer than Earth)
  • Mars has a revolution of 687 Earth days (321.75 day difference)

LIFE ON MARS?

  • The existence of life on Mars still remains a mystery.
  • However NASA continues to investigate any possibility
  • The finding of water and polar ice caps lead to believe it could sustain life
  • Although it contains water it couldnt sustain human life due to its atmosphere
  • (Lack of breathable air)

FUN FACTS

  • Mars' moon Phobos is 14 miles across and Deimos is 8!
  • The planet itself is named after the roman god of war.
  • Mars is home to the largest volcano in the solar system (Olympus Mons)
  • Mars is actually very cold because its atmosphere is not thick enough to trap heat
  • During a mars winter almost 20% of the air freezes
