DESCRIBE THE IDEALS OF SIMÓN BOLÍVAR AND HOW SUCCESSFUL HE WAS AT ACHIEVING THEM.

HIS ASPIRATIONS

  • Bolívar was a passionate republican
  • Inspired by enlightenment ideas and popular sovereignty
  • Looked up to key figure, George Washington
  • Wanted to unite South America and crush the Spanish Army
  • Goal was to unite South America into a confederation much like US

OVERCOMING SPANISH RULE

  • After exile, in 1819 he assembled a rebel army
  • His rebel army cripushed Spanish forces in Columbia
  • Continued campaigning in Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru
  • Coordinated efforts with other creole elites such as José de San Martín
  • By 1824 creole elites had deposed of Spanish rule

UNITING SOUTH AMERICA

  • Bolívar's ultimate goal was to make a confederation that mirrors the US
  • During the 1820's Venezuela, Columbia, amd Ecuador formed the Gran Columbia
  • Bolívar attempted to bring in Peru and Bolivia into the Gran Columbia
  • By 1830 each nation was too independent which broke up the Gran Columbia
  • Bolívar declared South America ungovernable and went to Europe for self exile

SUMMARY

  • Bolívar successfully united creole elites
  • He also successfully defeated Spanish rule
  • Had values inspired by George Washington and the enlightenment
  • By 1830 strong political power prevented South America from unification
  • Went to Europe for self exile after declaring South America ungovernable
