The First Great Awakening

  • The First Great Awakening began primarily with the preaching of George Whitefield
  • Whitefield Preached more than 18,000 sermons in his lifetime, and is perhaps the soul reason for the Great Awakening.
  • The First Great Awakening brought protestant Christianity into prominence in America.

The Second Great Awakening

  • The Second Great Awakening began with protestant social events in New England.
  • People had begun to show less favor in Christianity at this time
  • After this event, there was much more emphasis placed on religion than education and philosihpy

Christianity in America

  • Presbyterians were the first protestant Christians to migrate to the developing America.
  • Methodists were the second.
  • These two religions laid the foundation for the Great Awakening

Presbyterianism

  • Presbyterianism is a more traditional form of reformed christianity
  • It has many of the same customs as Catholicism in areas such as Communion and Christening
  • Presbyterianism has become more reformed over time and were the first reformed Christians to migrate to America.
  • Presbyterianism was founded by John Knox and John Calvin

METHODISM

  • Methodism was the most reformed among the religions that spread to America at first
  • Methodism was founded by George Whitefield, John Wesley, Charles Wesley
  • Methodism was an example of the environment of most modern churches.
