PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE AMERICAS AND THE OCEANIA

BY: EMILY EDENS

Hernan Cortes’ conquest of Mexico began with an expedition to search for gold on the American Mainland. With the aid of Dona Marina, he was able to forge alliances with peoples who resented domination by the mexica, the leaders of the Aztec Empire, and who reinforced the small spanish forces with logistical support and secure bases in friendly territory.

Spanish administrators established two centers of authority in the americas, Mexico and Peru. Each governed by a viceroy who was responsible to the king of spain.

In both the Spanish and the portuguese colonies, migrants born in europe know as peninsulares, stood at the top of the social Hierarchy, followed by creoles, mestizos lived on the fringes of society. As time went on, the number of mestizos grew, and they became essential contributors to their societies, especially in Mexico and Brazil.

The portuguese mariner Pero Alvares Cabral sighted Brazil and stopped there briefly in 1500 while making a tack through the Atlantic Ocean en route to India. When French and Dutch mariners began to visit Brazil, the portuguese king decided to consolidate his claim to the land. He brought Sugar plantations to the brazilian coasts.

French and English migrants did not find large, centralized states like the Aztec and Inca empires. Nor did they encounter agricultural people living in densely settled societies. When European settlers saw forested lands not bearing crops, they staked out farms and excluded the Indigenous people. In europe, hunting was merely a pastime, whereas the native people relied on hunting as a way of life.

The Treaty of Tordesillas divided the world along an imaginary north-south line 370 leagues west of the Azores and Cape Verde. Spain could claim land west of that line and portugal could claim land east of that line. This helped keep peace between the two countries.
