Africa is home to the Congo Basin, which is the second largest rainforest in the world. Because of deforestation, a great chunk of the Congo Basin is gone.
Since 2000 the rate of deforestation is 700 sq miles per year. The rainforest has been so destroyed that you can see the difference from satellite pictures.
The people who are in charge of the deforestation in Africa are searching for oil and other minerals for mining. The outcome for searching for resources can lead to oil spills and other pollution in the rainforest.
Deforestation also changes the climate of the rainforest. The trees help keep the forest a nice hot to moderate temperature. They also give shelter to the majority of the animals in the rainforest.
