TERRORISM

DEFINING TERRORISM

When defining terrorism it is important to recognize that the definition varies depending on the source.

THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

The department of defense defines terrorism as, "the calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear."

FBI

The FBI defines terrorism as, "the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, civilian population, or any segment thereof."

THE UNITED NATIONS

The United Nations defines it as, "an anxiety-inspiring method of repeated violent action, employed by (semi)-clandestine individual, group or state actors, for idiosyncratic, criminal or political reasons."

AFTER THE FIRST FRENCH REVOLUTION

The first known use of terrorism arose after the first French Revolution during Robespierre's Reign of Terror.

TYPES OF TERRORISM

STATE TERRORISM

State terrorism is the use of fear by a government to control its people.

RELIGIOUS TERRORISM

Religious terrorism is the use of fear to advance religious ideals.

Religious terrorists are likely to die while carrying out their objective.

RIGHT WING TERRORISM

Right wing terrorists aim, "to combat liberal governments and preserve traditional social orders."

LEFT WING TERRORISM

Left wing terrorists groups seek to eliminate the social classes. They are fundamentally opposed to capitalism.

PATHOLOGICAL TERRORISM

Pathological terrorists carry out violent acts for the sheer enjoyment of it and are very rarely politically motivated.

SEPARATIST TERRORISM

These terrorists seek to break away from the established government and create a whole new nation. This is often brought about because of discrimination.

NARCO-TERRORISM

These groups are primarily motivated by drug related activities.

CYBER-TERRORISM

These groups use technology to advance their goals. They achieve this through hacking governments or personal accounts.

COUNTERMEASURES

The best countermeasure to religious terrorism is to reach out to religious leaders to help bridge the gap between the branches.

For separatist terrorism the best countermeasure is inclusion of minority groups.

The two countermeasures governments seem to favor most are the assassination of the groups higher ups and the stopping the money flow to the group.

TERRORIST OR FREEDOM FIGHTER

YOU DECIDE.
