THE HISTORY OF LINEN

  • Linen is one of the earliest vegetable fabric known to civilization and be woven.
  • The romance of linens' history is closely interwoven with the Bible stories.
  • When the tomb of Pharaoh, who died 1258B.C, - 3,000 years ago - was discovered in 1881, the linen wrappings were in a state of perfect preservation.
  • In olden days, in almost every country, each family grew flax and wove the linen for its own use.
  • Linen is another word for flax.

ORIGIN OF LINEN

  • Flax has been used for cloth from around 10,000 years ago.
  • There has been remains of linen fishing nets, clothing, and uncorked flax in Switzerland, in the ruins of Stone Age lakeside houses.
  • Flax was used in ancient Egypt, tomb paintings show scenes of sowing, spinning flax, harvest, and depicting flax.
  • Annual flax, was cultivated in the Middle East region for around 5,000 years, and still grows wild in regions around Persian gulf, the campaign and black seas.

PROPERTIES OF FABRIC OR FIBER

  • Color- yellowish to grey
  • Length- 18 to 30 inches
  • Elastic Recovery- Linen fiber has not enough elastic recovery properties like cotton fiber.
  • Lusture- It is brighter than cotton fiber and it is slightly silky
  • Effects of Insects- Linen fiber does not attacked by moth-grubs or beetles.

CARE FOR FABRIC OR FIBER

  • best to wash linen products in lukewarm or cold, and preferably soft, water.
  • linen is almost always better off with a hand or machine wash than a dry cleaning.
  • Machine dry linens and store in a cool dry place.

USES OF LINEN

  • Linen is a popular fabric choice for clothing.
  • Linen is used for dish towels, upholstery and sheets.
  • Linen is also used for draperies, table cloth, bedspreads, curtains, drapes, and even rugs
  • wall canvases, artist’s canvases, wall coverings, napkins, lampshades, chair backing covers, runners, handkerchiefs, gift wrappings, book covers, cell phone pouches and other various accessories…

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Linen is one of the oldest textiles sorts in the world which is produced from linen fiber.
  • Linen fibre is strong and not elastic, so linen fabrics crumple very easy
  • Linen fibre goes damp and dry very soon, that is why the fabric warms during cold night and cools the body during hot midday.
  • Linen fabric is resistant to static electric load.
  • Linen fabrics are three times stronger than cotton fabrics.
