PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The Louisiana State Flag was adopted on November 22, 2010
The flag was chosen because of the design incorporating the state seal as the main image.
This design had also been used in 1912 but the current state flag was a revised version of this flag and reintegrated as the official state flag in 2010
The state flag consists of a Pelican mother wounding herself in order to feed her three offspring with her blood. The combined image of the mother and her three children also form a fleur-de-lis; another state recognized symbol.
The symbolism of the mother pelican feeding her little baby pelicans is part of an ancient legend which preceded Christianity. The legend was that during a famine, the mother pelican wounded herself, striking her breast with the beak to feed her young with her blood to prevent starvation.
