AMERICAN CROCODILE

Where is it located?
-many tropical areas
-within the US, is limited only to Florida
-typically in southern Florida, but two have been found in Tampa Bay Area
-typically in coastal areas and rivers
-American crocodile is the only species besides the saltwater crocodile to thrive in saltwater habitats
- also in mangrove swamps

How many are left?
-about 2,000
-is now one of the largest crocodile species
-in 1974, there were only a few hundred left
-they are still considered endangered

Niche:
-eat fish, reptiles, birds, and small mammals
- coexist with the American alligator
-are not a threat to humans unless provoked

Not many recently because they have made such a comeback
