matter

The three states of matter are

  • Solid
  • liquid
  • gas

Solid-The state of matter that has a definite volume and a definite shape. ex. a brick

liquid-a state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape. ex. water/h2o

gas-a state of mater that has no definite shape or volume. ex. hydrogen

changes of states of matter

melting- the change from solid to liquid

freezing-the change from liquid to solid

condensation-the change from gas to liquid.

evaporation-the change from liquid to gas

Atoms-the basic unit chemical element

elements-substances found deep in the earth

compounds-two elements that have chemically combined together. EX. h2o atoms

heterogeneous-a mixture that can be seperated

homogeneous-A mixture that can not be seperated

Physical Change- a change that does not change shape but its substabce

chemical change-a change that changes a substance into a new substance

law of conservation of mass-the fact that mass is not created or destroyed in any physical or chemical cange

mass and volume density= mass over volume

potential energy-the energy possessed by a person or object.ex. a diver has potential energy to fall down to the water

kinetic energy is the energy of moving matter.ex. a car speeding down the highway has kinetic energy

speed=distance divided by time
