Post hoc, ergo prompter hoc

  • Allstate holiday commercial
  • Man talks about how last thanksgiving many people deep fried their turkey
  • Then a small portion of those people set their house on fire
  • Therefore the first event caused the second

BANDWAGON

  • 'Be like Mike' Gatorade commercial
  • The whole commercial is about people trying to be like mike
  • Therefore since all these people are trying to be like mike, you should too.

BEGGING THE QUESTION

  • Miracle speech
  • Herb Brooks is speaking to his team before an important game
  • Herb says "Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world."
  • Yet he does not back up that statement with any evidence

EITHER OR

  • Nokia Lumia vs iPhone commercial
  • Everyone in this commercial is either using the Nokia Lumia or iPhone
  • Therefore they are acting like those are the on,y two options, when really there are many

HASTY GENERALIZATION

  • Axe astronaut commercial
  • Shows a fire fighter save a woman. But then she sees astronaut
  • She then runs to the astronaut even though the fireman was the helpful one
  • The commercial is summed up with on statement "nothing beats an astronaut"
  • That sweeping statement is based on too few facts.

NON SEQUITUR

  • Old spice commercial
  • Man is advertising body wash to smell like a man
  • He also throws in random comments that have nothing to do with the advertisement
  • "I'm on a horse."

SLIPPERY SLOPE

  • Direct TV Commercial
  • Opens up by saying that when you have cable that causes depression.
  • Then depression causes this and so on
  • Therefore saying that the first event caused the second to happen and so on.

AD HOMINEM

  • Ron Paul republican debate
  • In this debate, McCain keeps creating arguments towards Ron Paul
  • Ron Paul then chooses to attack these topics by saying things about McCain.
  • Ron Paul is attacking the person, rather than the issue.
  • "He has a misunderstanding of foreign policies."

STEREOTYPE

  • Axe chocolate commercial
  • Man sprays axe chocolate on himself
  • All girls instantly love him
  • Stereotypes that all girls love chocolate

STRAW MAN

UNRELIABLE AUTHORITY

  • Eliquis Commercial
  • Old man taking Eliquis is speaking about what the medicine does
  • He talks like he is the doctor, rather than the patient.
  • "Eliquis causes less major bleeding thanWarfarin."
