HISTORICAL INFORMATION

  • 500 B.C~ Greeks and roman are using counting devices like the abacus
  • 300 A.D~ The Chinese begin to develop the abacus as a mathematical instrument

History Cont~
Calculation was a need from early times when it was necessary to account to others for individual or group actions. Mostly for maintaining inventories. Early men counted by means of matching one object to another. The operations of addition and subtraction were simply operations of adding or subtracting of objects

History Cont~
After a long while of counting in pairs the next logical step was to produce the first 'personal calculator' ((the abacus)) which used the same concepts of one set of objects standing in for objects in another set.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT AND HOW IS IT NOW

  • It changed the way counting was preformed.
  • It was easier to count because of how easy it was to carry the abacus.
  • The impact of the abacus set a platform for future ways of counting and calculators.
  • It was an important start in the forming of ways in counting

IMPACT TODAY

  • As already stated; it set a platform for counting systems and ways of counting.
  • Without this invention many forms of counting wouldn't exist and the calculator wouldn't exist either

MODIFICATIONS

  • At first it was made with a wooden frame, wooden beads and wire to hold the beads.
  • After quite some time it was all made of wood
  • Now days they are still made of wood but all metal ones exist as well

This information has changed our perspective because many of these things are still used to day. Making us realize that China has many great qualities and hopefully more to come.
