IVAN III

  • Grand prince of Moscow from 1462 to 1505
  • Declared russian independence from the mongol rule
  • Made moscow into a large and powerful state

ACQUISITION OF NOVGOROD

  • Was a prosperous trading city
  • Ivan demanded that the city acknowledges his authority
  • In 1478, he absorbed it into his state

COSSACKS

  • Recruited/enslaved peasants that were offered freedom to settle conquered lands
  • Turkish word for free man
  • Particulary influential in the steepe lands to the south
  • They moved into siberia

IVAN IV

  • Reigned from 1533 to 1584
  • Embarked on reforms to root out corruption in the governent
  • Ruled with the help of his Chosen Council
  • Worked to create an independant administration

PETER I

  • Reigned from 1682 to 1725
  • He spent much of his early rule in germantown
  • Became fascinated by invention and innovation
  • In 1689 he took the title of tzar
  • He instituted a policy of modernization
