THE MANCHUS

  • Group of invaders from Manchuria.
  • Captured empire; Qing Empire (1644).
  • Pastoral nomads to powerful military.
  • Captured Korean and Mongolia, then China.
  • Stayed as ethnic group; NO intermarriage.

KANGXI

  • Confucian scholar; effective, enlightened ruler.
  • Conquered Taiwan; extended to Mongolia, central Asia, and Tibet.
  • Qing Empire started to prosper; Manchu hierarchy was stabilized.
  • Established Confucianism in the government; helped Manchus rule effectively.
  • Suppressed rebellions from the Chinese people when the Manchus took over.

QUIANLONG

  • A sophisticated and learned ruler, poet, and artist.
  • Under his rule, China was peaceful, prosperous, and powerful.
  • He was the grandson of Kangxi.
  • The imperial treasury grew so much.
  • Stopped tax collections four times.
