- Crusade was launched by king Louis IX of France over the concerns of the level of power the remaining crusader states had.
Another concern was the Egyptian Mamluks were very powerful in the East and we're taking over the remaining territory that the Crusader states had.

- Louis ix's brother, Charles of Anjou, persuaded his brother to attack the ports of Tunis to make the expedition to Egypt easier (July 18, 1270)
Louis IX's plan was to convert the Bay of Tunis to Christianity so he could take over.

- But, Tunis had prepared for his arrival and repaired a large city wall and imported Moroccan soldiers
- ended in defeat on louis' behalf
Louis' army suffered from lack of clean water and extreme heat.
Because of this, his son (John Tristan) died.

- shortly after the death of his son, louis died from a plague on august 25, 1270
- charles of anjou brought in supplies to recover the army after his death, and obtained control over the army and the Crusade.

- On October 30th, 1270, The Crusaders made an agreement with the sutlan to retreat in exchange for free trade with the city and guaranteed residence for monks and priests.
210,000 ounces of gold was paid to the King of Sicily.

- after the agreement was made, Charles and the Crusaders tried to go into Syria but a storm caused them to lose all supplies.
This forced them to return to France which officially ended the crusade.

final thoughts.
- The Crusade took place because the concerns over the level of power that the remaining Crusader States had.
- 1291 was the official year of the end of the fighting in the Holy Land when the city of Acre, the last Crusader base in Palestine, fell.
Church View: the 7th and 8th Crusades were complete disasters. Louis IX died before he could reach the goal of the 8th crusade which was to establish an order.

- This crusade seemed very simple, and a little pointless since nothing was really achieved.
KARA'S THOUGHTS
- I think that this crusade was not necessary because no big issue was resolved, war causes division, this crusade did not bring anyone together.
The Crusade was considered a partial success because Charles was able to recieve trade right with Tunis but this was basically the only gain. There was distruction and death which was not a plus for the Crusade. This crusade was a failure, it symbolized the end of the Crusades. The Crusades was a time of fighting and it was good that the fighting came to an end.
OLIVIA'S THOUGHTS
- I think that this crusade was not necessary. louis was, in a way, forced into it by Charles. His army was not ready for its defeat at tunis. there was a lot of loss with no significant gain.
