MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

  • The Thermometer: Invented the first thermometer in 1606.
  • Jupiter Satellites: Galileo discovered the four largest satellites.
  • The moon: discovered the moon had craters, mountains and valleys.
  • Sunspots: He found sunspots that drifted from one side of the
  • Sun's disc to the other.

BELIEFS

  • What Galileo believed about the positioning of the planets caused heresy.
  • The church said he would have to admit he was wrong even though Galileo
  • knew he was right. Instead of killing him, they put him in house arrest for
  • the rest of his life. He was a humanist because he cared about what was on
  • on earth, as much as religion.
