MOOC =

  • Massive - many learners
  • Open - no special entry and free
  • Online - study via internet
  • Course - series of lectures etc over 3 to 16 weeks
  • Only been possible in the last few years

MOOCs are offered on 'platforms' that determine presentation, assessment, interaction, etc

platforms used in this study

  • Coursera
  • EdX
  • Futurelearn

Universities provide most of the courses and content

Currently most courses are provided by elite US and European universities

MOOCs

  • Still evolving
  • Provide large amounts of data on learner behaviour
  • Spiral of improvement for on campus and online teaching

Global citizenship

  • Karlberg
  • Ecological interdependence
  • Identity
  • 'us and them' prevents collective action
Karlberg points out that we need to think of ourselves as global citizens. Identity needs to recognise both our common humanity and our biological and cultural differences.

Adult learners

  • Are voluntary and self-directed
  • Use experience as a source of knowledge
  • Apply new knowledge to solve problems
  • Need to know why they are learning the content

Transformative learning theory

  • First proposed by Jack Mezirow
  • Developed by Mezirow and many others
  • Uses cognitive, experiential and social constructive learning

The goal of transformative learning is to educate adults to think autonomously

Adults use a 'frame of reference' to interpret new experiences
Changing this perspective requires critical reflection on assumptions and discourse with others

Perspective transformation can be dramatic or occur by gradual accumulation

Perspective transformation leads to a frame of reference that is more inclusive, discriminating, self-reflective and integrative of experience

Stages of TLT

  • A disorientating dilemma
  • Critical reflection
  • Rational discourse

  • Need to consider emotions and other ways of knowing

  • Technology is enabling
  • Learner centred approach

Results

  • Encounter different worldviews
  • There are a number of courses with potential
  • Problem of time
  • Sequence of courses
MOOCs attract a wide range of participants so that it almost inevitable for that people will encounter worldviews different to their own.
There are a number of courses with the potential of fostering TL. Participants may be at any stage of perspective transformation.
The problem of time may be solved by suggesting a sequence of courses

TL in MOOCs is possible
