- Dashner, James. The Maze Runner. New York: Delacorte, 2009. Print.
Exposition:
Thomas is sent into the maze by the creators. He can't remember anything and has to adjust. He remembers him name but nothing else, just his language and foods and stuff like that. But one thing that was different from him compared to the rest was that he had a connection with the maze but he didn't know what.
Rising action:
Thomas learned there was ways about the maze and about the environment they live in. He found the way they said things and the way they said it was weird. He learned that after a few days you have to pick the job to help that your best at. He wanted to be a runner but his friend chuck told him that it takes months to train and become a runner. A runner is a person that runs through the maze to find a way out. One night when Alby(the leader) and Minho(the head runner) went out to look at a dead griever(a creature that gos out at night looking for humans) but it wasn't dead and it stung Alby. Every night the doors close to the maze to keep the humans safe in the glade.
Rising action:
Alby was stung and passed out. That meant Minho had to drag him out. Thomas and others were waiting for them to get back since the wall were going to close. As the walls started to close Minho turned the corner heading for the exit carrying Alby on his back. Thomas knew that the number one rule is to never go out into the maze if your not a runner. When he noticed that they weren't going to make it back in time and the walls were almost completely shut Thomas made a run for it into the maze. Nobody has ever survived a night in the maze. Minho thought it was the worst decision ever and he just made his death grant. But Thomas was determined to stay alive and make it through.
Rising action:
That morning everyone was waiting at the doors to see if they survived. After 10 minutes later they were ready to declare them dead. When suddenly the came around the corner not stung and no major injuries. They were shocked, happy, but incredibly mad at Thomas for breaking there number 1 rule. To not go out into the maze of your not a runner. Right away Thomas and Minho went to get a meal and rest, while Newt declared a gathering to see what they should do with Thomas. Nobody has every broken that rule before since it was so serious. Some suggested that he should go in the slammer for a week others said he should become a runner and that he only saved people's lives.
Rising action:
They divided to put him in the slammer for 1 day and have him train to be a runner the next day. Some loved it some hated it. But I think it was fair. The day Thomas was locked up in the slaslammer a girl named Teresa was coming up in the cage to enter the Glade this wasn't supposed to happen because they are only supposed to get a new person every one month. Everybody or on the Glade knew this was an odd thing. Thomas made it through the night and A new person was coming up in the box in two days within when Thomas came up. Everybody in the Glade wanted to blame Thomas for it but he knew we didn't do anything, so they let Thomas out to see the girl that came up, he recognized her.
Rising action:
He didn't know from what but he recognized her. The next day Thomas trained with Minho running the maze and graphing maps. They went back to the map room and compared them to there section from the days before. Thomas wondered why they didn't compare those to other sections. So he got Teresa and a few others to go through the drawings and compare them to other sections to find clues on the way out. That night the walls never close and day ended and the sun never came back up. The grievers came out and killed one of them and headed back to their home in the maze. Newt and Thomas came up with a theory that they only take one person per night.
Rising action:
The taking and killing One person a night continued. Me know and Thomas were staying out even at night to map the maze and see if anything happens when the walls move each night. After a few days of comparing the Giants of the maps of the sections to each other and putting them together they noticed that there's a word sequence that was repeating. The next day once they discovered the sequence they found a griever that was heading back to its hole when they saw it run back to this hole the doors opened and they thought their way in was their way out. The next day Thomas wanted to get out the people in the Glade split into who was staying and who is going at a shot to leave the maze.
Climax:
Thomas and the people that were going with him all ran to section 7 for where the griever hole is. Over 10 grievers came out Thomas Chuck and Teresa all Randall a hole to punch in the sequence. Teresa was typing it in while Thomas and Chuck were standing guard. There were seven words in the sequence she punched in six but the seventh one wouldn't work. She tried a bunch of times but when she pressed the button to enter it in it would not work so Chuck went over by her since there was only grievers by Thomas Chuck press one button and the doors open they grab the other members that were standing guardto go through the whole and they were out. They went out a door that had the exit sign they saw the creation room and they were terrified.
Falling action:
They had to see the room that controlled the maze. The head created made a video telling them that they made it out with more people than they expected. Then Gally came out and shot chuck. (Gally was stung and Thomas and his crew had no clue how he got in the control room since he didn't come with them). When Gally shot Chuck, Thomas broke out into tears because he felt like he lost a brother. Then people from the outside world burst in and shot Gally. They told Thomas and his crew to run like your life depends on it. They ran onto a bus and piled in.
Resolution:
The people that rescued themtold them about the flair. (The flare was an in enormous flair I reached out so far that it created a huge heat wave on earth many of humans died.) They also explained to them about the disease that happen that they're trying to find a cure for, which is why they were put in the maze as a huge test. They realized that they saved others lives risking there own. They arrived to a old building to rest and figure out there future.
How does the exposition affect the the characters /plot in the story-
The exposition effects the characters greatly. Thomas was effected because he got his memory swiped and was put into the maze with all of the others. This effects the plot because if Thomas never came into the Glade they might of never got out of the maze.
How does the rising action affect the characters/plot in the story-
If Thomas never ran into the maze and saved Alby and Minho, they would both be dead. Then Thomas would of never became a runner and found and thought of the idea on the way out. And if Teresa didn't come up in the box a couple days later then nobody should of memorize the sequence to type it in at the griever door.
How does the climax affect the characters/plot
If they never got out off the maze, they would of all died and never got into the outside world. If they didn't head out that night to escape they would of never got help from the people that killed the creators.
How does the falling action affect the the characters/plot
If the people never came and helped them, they would of had to go into the outer world by there selves and never would of know about the flare and the disease.
How does the resolution affect the characters/plot
When they tell them about the flare and the disease this effected them because they realize that by them going in the maze saved the human race.
Theme
The theme of the story is to never give up, from the beginning wanting to be a runner, to the middle having the courage to lead everybody into the maze, and to the end when he leads them in the control room and into the outside world.
"Look at that shank" (Dashnner 3)
