Ancient architecture consists of columns, pillars, and arches

Summary of Temple of Olympia Zeus:
The Temple of Olympian Zeus is one example of famous Greek architecture. This was made during the time of Greek tyrants in 6th century B.C. It was made of marble which was the average material for construction. This is in Athens, Greece. The temple was not completed until 638 years after it was started under the reign of Emperor Hadrian. During the time of construction, Greece was undergoing rule by tyrants who gained favor from building public works. This temple may have been one such work.

Temple of Olympia Zeus

  • Architecture
  • It was made out of stone and marble
  • They didn't color it in any way (white as marble)
  • There was realistic busts or constructs throughout the temple
  • This function of art is used to be a place of worship to their gods
  • The feelings that the constructors wished to convey is awe, tranquility, and humbleness in honor of their gods
  • The tyrants who ordered the building of this were wishing for sympathy from the people to gain favor
  • People would come here to add offerings and give prayer to one of their gods, Zeus

Modern architecture consists of glass, shades rather than color, and odd structural shapes

Whitehouse

  • Construction started in 1792
  • Located in Washington D.C., U.S.A.
  • Used to house the president of the United States
  • It has been the residence of every president since John Adams in 1800
  • 54,896 ft^2 is the floor space
  • Draws influence from Greek architecture

SIMILARITIES

  • Both use large columns/pillars as the supports for the building
  • They both were considered symbols for their respective purposes (one for gods, another for their presidents)
  • They both share a flat, box shape

DIFFERENCES

  • The whitehouse has been updated and continues to have renovations and such improving the structure
  • The temple is not much more than rubble now
  • The temple was given as an offering, while the Whitehouse was given to be a home
  • Less detail added to the Whitehouse
  • Whitehouse made for presidents, temples made for the public to worship gods

Conclusion:
To summarize, we have come a long way since the time of Ancient Greece. We have improved upon their ideas and ways to influence what we do. Our architecture is just one example of how much the Greeks have influenced our culture in today's society.
