- Located in Ecuador
- About 60 kilometers south of Quito
- Can be clearly seen from the city of Quito

- Considered to be the world's tallest active volcano
- Has a height of 5,897 meters
- 2 times higher than Mount St. Helens in Washington state
- 86 known eruptions
- First eruption in 1534, most recent eruption was in 1940 or 1942 (42 was not a confirmed eruption)

- Most eruptions were of mud, lava, and/or ash
- When the ice/snow at the top began to melt, it was a sign that it could possibly erupt
- Name means "Smooth Neck of the Moon"- was an honored "Sacred Mountain" to the local Andean people
