What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it hard to tell what is real or not real, to think clearly, and to have normal social/emotional responses.

Causes

Genes and environment; schizophrenia is a genetic disorder, meaning it is passed down by parents to their children. Scientist have found many genes associated with a higher risk for this disorder.

Symptoms

Hallucinations, delusions, social withdrawal, insomnia, depression, and disorganized thinking.

Methods of treatment

The only treatments currently available for schizophrenia are lifelong medication and therapy. Some common medications are Albify, Risperdal and Zyprexa.

Side Effects of Medication

Side effects of taking medication can include drowsiness, blurred vision, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, sensitivity to the sun, and skin rashes.
