ABOUT HER

  • Born August 26th, 1827 in Adam County, Ohio.
  • Died February 2nd, 1900(age 72) in Sanatoga, Pennsylvania.

WHAT SHE WAS

  • She was American Social reformer and relief worker.
  • She also cared for wounded soldiers and joined the Keokuk Ladies' Soldiers' Aid Society. She traveled to military hospitals and described the horrible conditions, prompting local support.

WHAT SHE DID

  • She served as the first president of the WCTU(Women's Christian Temperance Union) from 1874 to 1879.
  • She also attended a seminary for girls before she hit the age of 20.

THE WCTU

  • The WCTU was organized by women who were concerned about the destructive power of alcohol and the problems it was causing their families and society. They met in churches to pray and then marched to the saloons to ask the owners to close their establishments.

  • WCTU members chose total abstinence from all alcohol as their life style and they adopted this definition of temperance:
  • ... moderation in all things healthful; total abstinence from all things harmful. Xenophon (Greek philosopher), c. 400 BCE
