HIV/AIDS

  • H – Human – This particular virus can only infect human beings.
  • I – Immunodeficiency – HIV weakens your immune system by destroying important cells.
  • V – Virus – A virus can only reproduce itself by taking over a cell in the body of its host.

ZIMBABWE

  • 1.2 million (2009 est.)living with HIV / AIDS
  • Less than 38% are living in major cities.
  • 50% chance children will be born with HIV
  • One of the poorest countries in the world.

GETTING BETTER

  • Literacy not the problem
  • For the past few years the AIDS population has dropped
  • knowing is half the battle

MONKEY BUSINESS

  • AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus
  • originated in non-human primates in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • transferred to humans during the late 19th or early 20th century.

HOW DID WE GET IT?

  • Nobody know for sure but here are some theories
  • a hunter transmitted the virus in a bite or scratch
  • experiment in 1957 where the kidneys of infected chimps were used
  • Spread by humans?
