James Oglethorpe
Mr. Olgethorpe founded Colonial Georgia in 1732. He was born: December 22, 1696, Godalming, County Surray, England. Oglethorpe became a member in the Parliament at England in 1722.
Reasons Founded
First they build this colony for English debtors. People who are unable to pay back their debts. Another reason is to protect other colonies from Spanish attack. Georgia could serve as a military barrier against Spain.
People from Colonial Georgia
Most of Georgia settlers were poor people from the British Isles or religious refugees from Europe mainland. Most slaves also live in Georgia because of farming. The original resident trustees were one very rich than other settlers.
Climate and Geography
Georgia enjoyed warm climate with hot summers and mild winters. Geography ranged from coastal plains in the east to piedmont farther inland. The westernmost regions were mountainous. The soil was perfect for farming and the growing season was longer than in any other region. Hot summers, however, propagated diseases such as malaria and yellow fever.
Colonial Georgia Economy
The Georgia 's economy was almost entirely based on farming. Rice, indigo, tobacco, sugarcane, and cotton were cash crops. Crops were grown on large plantations where slaves and indentured servants worked the land.
Religion of Colonial Georgia
The main church of Georgia was the Anglican Church. Many religion was practiced except for Catholicism. Catholicism was banned. Even the First African Baptist Church was made.
Colonial Georgia Politics
The English Parliament was supporting Colonial Georgia for a long time. John Reynolds was the first royal governor of Georgia. Reynolds tried to move the capital, Savannah, to somewhere inland. Many royal governors were appointed after Reynolds.
