PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ESOPHAGUS AND STOMACH

Peristaltic movement is muscle contractions that push food down into the food into the stomach. It functions in the esophagus by the muscle contractions that occur to push the food down the esophagus into the stomach, and prevents food from traveling backwards through the esophagus

Digestion of food occurs in the esophagus when the salvia produced in the salivary glands from the mouth break down the food as it passes through the esophagus so that the food is able to pass more quickly and easily

The primary function of the stomach is to break down food after feeding and extract nutrients necessary to the body

A chyme is pulpy acid that passes from the stomach to the small intestine. The smooth muscles of the stomach produce contractions known as mixing which leads to the production of chyme

The stomach has a lot of acids which help to break down food matter and to kill bacteria. The stomach releases enzymes that kill bacteria and balance PH. It mixes the acid in the stomach in order to digest food

Parietal cells in the gastro epithlium create HCl (acid) and the chief cells create pepsinogen

The stomach does not digest itself because of the makeup of the stomach's digestive juices and its protective lining. The digestive juices(gastric juice) consists mostly of HCP, which is very acidic. The stomach is made of protein and if it wasn't protected by a lining, the juices would eat through. The stomach lining contains epithelial cells that secrete a protective layer of mucus and bicarbonate. This provides a physical barrier so that the acid cannot touch the stomach. When acid hits the lining a secretion of bicarbonate is released. Bicarbonate is alkaline and a very neutralizing acid

Sphincters are circumferential muscles that constrict or relax to regulate passage. The stomach is bound by 2 sphincters; the lower esophagus sphincters that keeps acid in the stomach and the pyloric sphincter that regulates the flow of food to the duodenum

Stomach acid serves to sterilize the contents of the stomach. It is the fluid content of the stomach

SKITTLES
Muscle contractions push food through the esophagus and toward the stomach after it's mixed with salivary amylase, the mixture enters the stomach known as chyme; The stomach produces acid that kills bacteria in the food.

STEAK
Muscle contractions push food through the esophagus, toward the stomach after its mixed with salivary amylase. Proteins unfold because of gastric acids. The gastric acids contain pepsin, which breaks proteins into peptides.

BUTTER
Broken down in the esophagus and muscle contractions push food toward the stomach where not only enzymes act on fats. Fats digest chemically by lipase enzyme in the small intestine.

BREAD
Broken down maltose in esophagus happens through peristalsis. Peristalsis. Mixes bolus with gastric secretions containing HCP in the stomach and produces chyme.

CELERY
Broken down maltose in esophagus and muscle contractions push the food toward the stomach. Fiber is not digested, it is absorbed into the bloodstream.
