• demonstrate the understanding how objects can be joined or taken from a group

First Grade OA.1.1

• use tools to solve word problems
• model addition and subtraction word problems using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem
• solve addition and subtraction word problems using objects, drawings, and equations including situations that involve sums and differences less than or equal to 20 using numbers 0-20
• solve basic word problems with unknown numbers in different positions

Second Grade OA.1.1

• understand when to use addition and/or subtraction within 100 in a word problem
• solve one-step addition and subtraction word problems
• justify your representation of how to solve the word problem.
