  • Her Family moved out east when she was 17
  • Ms. Jackson attended University of Rochester for a year
  • After college she spent her time writing short stories

"THE LOTTERY"

  • Every year a lottery is held in a small town
  • The winner of this lottery is stoned to death
  • This year's winner is the Hutchinson family
  • And Tessie Hutchison is not happy

  • Customs - the Lottery is a yearly tradition
  • Family- the Lottery bring family close together, hoping they don't get picked
  • Mob Mentality- The lottery shows how powerful a mob mentality.
  • Silence- No body says anything about the lottery until they are chosen to die

  • Controlled Violence
  • Overall the Lottery is just a controlled murder
  • In what seems to be a peaceful town violence is carried out
  • The mood is almost festive, the Lottery is almost like a festival
  • Adults coming together to chat, kids finding rocks and piling them up

  • The town is civilized enough to have a functional town
  • They have their own bank and post office
  • The Lottery brings out their savagery
  • In todays society we would never think about stoning someone
