What is the flipped classroom?

  • Inverts traditional teaching methods
  • Delivers instruction online, outside of class
  • Moves "homework" into the classroom

How did it start?

  • In 2007, teachers Bergman and Sams discovered PowerPoint recording software.
  • They recorded for students who missed class.
  • The online lectures started spreading.
  • They were asked to speak to teachers about their methods.
  • Teachers around the world began experimenting with online videos and podcasts.

How it works ...

  • Teachers post 3 or less concept-driven, less than 5 min videos per night.
  • Teachers revisit concepts students don't understand (more supportive).
  • Students don't get frustrated and can move at their own pace.

Tips for implementation ...

  • Connect with experts to build confidence.
  • Set up a channel on YouTube.
  • Allow student participation in planned, video-making schedule.
  • Set up iPod station for those that do not have home internet access.
  • Insert an image/answer to a riddle to spice up engagement.
