THE HISTORY OF ELECTROMAGNETISM

  • Electric current creates a magnetic field
  • In 1820, a scientist named Oerstead discovered this by accident
  • Prior to this, scientists thought these two things were unrelated
  • Magnetism that's produced by electricity is called ELECTROMAGNETISM

ELECTROMAGNETISM

  • Is... A current flowing through a wire
  • which creates a magnetic field that surrounds
  • the wire in concentric circles.

MICHAEL FARADAY

  • Around 1830, Michael Faraday
  • discovered that a magnetic field can
  • generate an electric current if a conductor
  • crosses the lines of forces in a magnetic field

RIGHT HAND THUMB RULE

  • When the thumb of the right hand is pointing in the same
  • direction as the current, the fingers of the right
  • hand curl around the wire in the direction of the
  • magnetic field

USES

  • Doorbells
  • MRI Machine
  • Store information on disks
  • Loudspeakers
  • Electroc Motors

To conclude...

Electromagnetism is very useful because it can be turned on or off by turning the current on or off, and it can be made stronger or weaker by using more or less current.
