Member of the court of the count of Namur.

- Born in Staves, Belgium
- Noble family
- Joined the military (family tradition)
- Became a courtier for the Count of Namur
- Found the court life boring and his riches embarrassing

Joined the monastery at Saint-Denis in Paris.

Brogne

Reforms - rule of St. Benedict

- Returned to Brogne
- Fought against lazy priests; replaced with monks with fervor
- Built his first monastery on his family's estate
- Followed the Rule of St. Benedict
- Moved from abbey to abbey to "clean house"
- Was Abbott of 20 abbeys throughout Belgium

Death

Brogne, 959

- After 40 years, he retired to Brogne
- He died in 959
- His relics are kept in St. Gérard monastery, the abbey of Maredsous, Aubange, and Ghent
