EDUCATION

  • Graduated from Topeka High School in 1917
  • University of Lincoln Nebraska
  • Colombia University to get teaching degree
  • Taught at Fisk University for 27 years
  • Founded the Art department at Fisk University

FIRST KNOWN FOR

  • illustrations for the two most important African-American magazine
  • Julis Rosenwald Foundation sent him a fellowship in 1938
  • Which funded his paintings to Haiti

STYLE AND INFLUENCE

  • modern European, ancient Egyptian, and West African art
  • studied African and Modern European art at the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania
  • studied more traditional French painting and drawing techniques at the Academie Scandinave.
