THE CIVIL WAR

1861-

In 1861, Texans voted to join the Confederate States of America. This action was caused by the North and The South.

In 1862, Galveston was taken by Union forces.
Union naval commanders stationed ships near Galveston. The Union leaders realized that Galveston was weakly defended. In October 1862, Union forces easily captured the city.

In 1862, R.J. Gatling invented the 10-barrel Gatling gun.

In 1863, Galveston was recaptured by the Confederacy.

Battle of Sabine Pass in 1863.
The Union commander planned to land his troops near Sabine Pass at the mouth of the river and march overland to capture Beaumont and Houston.
The Battle of Sabine Pass was an important victory for the Confredancy.

Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

Confederate forces surrendered at Vicksburg in 1863.

Last battle of the Civil War fought at Palmito Ranch in 1865.

In 1865, slavery was abolished in Texas.

General Lee surrendered in 1865.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865.
