HYPOTHESIS: If sound is introduced during sleep, then the sleeper will experience a dream that is related to that sound.
Ex. If audio of a story about a dinosaur is introduced, the sleeper will have a dream involving a dinosaur.

EXPERIMENTAL METHOD

  • Obtain a willing participant to take part in sleep study
  • Have participant go to sleep in a normal fashion
  • Begin playing chosen noise/music.
  • Music used was Dream a Little Dream of Me by the Mamas and the Papas
  • Play music or sound on repeat for approximately 90 minutes

CONTINUED...

  • After 90 min. is complete, wake the participant
  • Tell participant to leave their eyes closed and...
  • Think about the details of their dream in order to recount it to the recorder
  • The recorder either writes the dream down or records an audio interview with the participant
  • Once the data is collected, analyze the dream...

CONTINUED...

  • Review the data and compare it with the lyrics of the song or audio
  • If there is any correlation, the hypothesis has been proven.
  • If there is no correlation, the hypothesis has been disproven.

DATA: "I was volunteering in a grocery store (Whole Foods plus Joanne Fabrics). The dream started out in the fabric department. My mission was to find a certain polka dot fabric with orange and yellow dots for a pillow that my supervisor was making. I left the fabric department and took the elevator up to the next level. I brought with me goggles, a pair of shoes, and a sleeping bag . When I got off of the elevator, I had to wait for my fellow volunteer who was helping me find the fabric. So, I got into the sleeping bag outside of the elevator, put the goggles on, and waited for J. J wasn't coming but eventually, another volunteer did come who was looking for A. I told her I didn't know where A was but I would go look.....

So I left my things by the balcony outside of the elevator to go look for A. I went to the grocery section and saw JO and her mom checking out and then started heading back to the fabrics. I ran into A by the checkouts and she asked if I knew where her volunteer partner was. I said she had just gotten out of the elevator... Let's go! So we headed back down to the fabrics so we could take the elevator. As we were walking, K called out from behind and said 'there you guys are!' So I said 'hey guys' to K and C who was with him. C also volunteered at the grocery store but she was off duty getting groceries with K. So we kept walking and I jumped down to the main floor while A took the stairs and K and C checked out their groceries.....

I went back to fabrics and A took the elevator to the next level to meet with her partner. When I got to fabrics, I told my supervisor my partner didn't show up and that I couldn't find the polka dot fabric. She said she would help me and we went to the polka dot section of fabrics. She found the fabric right away and it was even already on a pillow. Then she threw the pillow back on the shelf but she was having trouble because she is short. She got the pillow up on the shelf on the second try and sent me on my next mission. I woke up."

LYRICS TO SONG: Stars shining bright above you, night breezes seem to whisper 'I love you', birds singing in the sycamore tree, dream a little dream of me, say nighty-night and kiss me, just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me, when I'm alone and blue as can be, dream a little dream of me, stars fading but I linger on dear, still craving your kiss, I'm longing to linger till dawn dear, just saying this....sweet dreams till sunbeams find you, sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you, but in your dreams whatever they be, dream a little dream of me, repeat x2

RESULTS

  • Based on the data collected, the hypothesis was disproven.
  • The content of the dream collected did not correlate...
  • with the content of the song and so therefore, the hypothesis was disproven

MANIFEST CONTENT: literal story of the dream
LATENT CONTENT: the participant could want something that is right in front of them or too obvious for them to see...(ex. The fabric needed for the pillow was found easily by the supervisor whereas the dreamer went through numerous steps to find the fabric.)
DREAMS AND WAKING LIFE: the participant had recently seen A, K, and C, and had recently volunteered (not at a grocery store)
