MILTON'S START

  • Milton grew up,as A mennonite
  • Miltons first job was running a printing press
  • Milton was later fired and was hired at a candy shop
  • There he learned to make all different kinds of candy
  • After four years he left to go start his own business in Philadelphia

FAILURE AND SUCCESS

  • After six years he closed his business in Philadelphia
  • He Moved to Colorado and learned to make caramels
  • Then he went to Chicago,New Orleans,then to New York in each place he failed
  • Back in Lancaster he started his new company Lancaster Carmel
  • His big break came from a large order from England

SWEET SUCCESS

  • Soon people all over the world ate carmels
  • At the worlds fair he bought a chocolate machine
  • He began the Hersey chocolate factory and sold sweet,dark chocolates
  • He married his wife he met in New York
  • August 1900 he sold the caramel company for 1 million dollars

CHOCOLATE FACTORY

  • Milton wanted to make milk chocolate that no one has had before
  • In 1900 he started making Hershey milk chocolate bars
  • He needed to build a factory and decided to build it in his hometown
  • There he built his factory and a town around it
  • Soon Hersey meant chocolate to most people

HIS FORTUNE

  • Kitty his wife wanted to start a Home and school for orphans
  • After she died he gave all his money(60 million) to the school
  • During the Great Depression he kept all his workers
  • He made Ration chocolate bars for the soldiers in World War II
  • He died in 1945 at age 88
