COCOS ISLAND

  • Divers rate it as one of the best places in the world to dive
  • In the Pacific Ocean
  • Has an extensive Marine Ecosystem
  • 550 km off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica
  • Only island in the tropical eastern pacific that w/ a tropical rainforest

FUN FACTS

  • Only inhabitants are the park rangers on the island
  • Unique species only found on Cocos Island
  • The whole island and surrounding marine life is the national park
  • Believed by many for a place to find pirate treasure
  • No: Public restrooms, hiking trails or overnight facilities

  • AD 200: Llopango Valcano sent a lot of El Salvador buried underneath thick layers of volcanic ash
  • AD 400: Resettlement begins again
  • AD 600: Loma de Caldera destroyed Joya de Cerén
  • Discovered in 1976 & is still being excavated
  • Joya de Cerén was a farming village

FUN FACTS

  • 1993 was the year it became inscripted as UNESCO world heritage sit
  • FUNDAR began to co-manage Joya de Cerén in mid-04
  • The fertile Zapolitán Valley is home to Joya de Cerén
  • Similar discoveries have been found all over El Salvador
