WHO IS NEILS BOHR???

  • Neils Bohr was a Danish physicist
  • Born October 7 1885 in Copenhagen,Denmark
  • Died November 18 1962
  • Known for: Bohr model, atomic theory

HOW'D HE GET SO SMART??

  • His father was a professor of physiology at Cambridge
  • 1903 entered Copenhagen University under Prof. Christiansen
  • Doctorate degree in physics in 1911
  • Began experimenting at Cambridge

WHAT DID HE DISCOVER? HOW?

  • Bohr discovered the Bohr model
  • This model shows electrons orbiting around a nucleus of protons and neutrons
  • He also did some work that clarified aspects of quantum mechanics
  • He made his discovery in 1913 by using Quantum Theory
  • He balanced electric charge between electrons and nucleus

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH DEMOCRITUS?

  • Democritus came up with the Atomic Theory 2400 years ago
  • His theory states the atom as the smallest unit of matter
  • His theory became the basis for all future advances, including Bohr's
  • Bohr's model dealt with the units within the atom, which Democritus didn't believe existed
  • Bohr was one of the many scientists who helped shape Democritus' early theory

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ME?

  • Bohr identified the structure of the atom
  • This model is a known concept throughout education
  • Helps us understand how an atom and it's protons, neutrons, and electrons relate
