Rock Types

  • Igneous
  • Metamorphic
  • Sedimentary

Igneous

Extrusive & Intrusive

Igneous Rocks are formed by magma cooling and crystallizing.

Extrusive - Cools quickly above earth's surface.
Intrusive - Cools slowly below earth's surface.

Examples of intrusive - Diorite & Sandstone
Examples of Extrusive - Coal & Limestone

Sedimentary

Clastic & Chemical

Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments are compacted together.

Clastic - Rocks made by natural processes
Chemical - Rocks made by chemicals

Examples of clastic rock - Breccia & Conglomerate
Examples of chemical rock - Hematite & Halite

Metamorphic

foliated & non-foliated

Metamorphic rocks are formed when other rocks become chemically changed and undergo heat and pressure.

Foliated rock has a marble appearance with bands while non-foliated does not.

Example of foliated rock - gneiss & phyllite
Example of non-foliated rock - Marble & Quartzite
