WHAT IS IT?

  • Ribosomes are all contained within living cells. They are tiny organelles made up of RNA (60%) and protein (40%)
  • There are two types; Eukaryotes and prokaryotes

EUKARYOTES

  • They are ribosomes made up of four strands of RNA
  • Produced and assembled in the nucleolus.
  • Some ribosomes remain free floating while others come together in cytoplasm.
  • 3 of 4 are produced in the nucleolus but 1 is produced outside and then brought back in to finish being made.

PROKARYOTES

  • Consist of three strands of RNA
