USING THE LAND

  • Not all recourses people need can be found in one place.
  • How people have got those recourses from the land has affected
  • earths geography.

HUNTING AND GATHERING

  • Hunting and gathering was the main way of life in most of human history.
  • Often they would move their camps from season to season.
  • They search for plants and animals to survive.
  • Today few such societies are left.
  • They remain for environments that are to difficult to farm.

AGRICULTURE

  • Agriculture began about 10,000 years ago.
  • Agriculture appeared when they learned how to grow plants
  • and tame animals.
  • This was called domestication.

URBAN GEORGRAPHY

  • Cities are the center of culture, trade, government, and ideas.
  • It includes the study of cities locations, size, land use, and
  • urban problems.

CITY GROUTH

  • A number of factors have influenced the site and growth of cities.
  • Location needs to be near key resources.
  • Also need to be near transportation and trade routes.
  • The worlds greatest cities grew up where two or three of these
  • factors are present.

URBANIZATION TODAY

  • The amount of people living in cites has dramatically grown
  • in the last century
  • Almost half of the worlds population lives in cities.
  • In developed countries about 75% of people live in cities.
  • But in the worlds rich countries urban growth has now slowed.

URBAN LAND USE

  • Cities around the world function in the same way.
  • Cities are home to businesses, government agencies, housing,
  • industries, and religious and social groups.
  • Most city centers are domonated by large stores, offices, and buildings
  • Such an area is called a Central Business District.

URBAN PROBLEMS

  • Most cities today face serious social, housing, transportation, or
  • environmental problems.
  • One key problem is poverty.
  • Air, water, and land pollution are also urban problems.
  • Problems are made worse when cities concentrate people into small areas.

RURAL GEOGRAPHY

  • Rural landscapes are found outside of cities.
  • Agriculture is key in rural areas.
  • However poeple who live there work in forestry, mining, and recreation.
  • Rural areas have land set aside in national parks and wildlife preserves.
