PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CROP ROTATION

Crop rotation is a systematic approach to deciding which crop to plant where from one year to the next. Crop rotation is very important to organic farmers who grow crops on a large scale and of varying importance to home gardeners.

Crop rotation is one of the most effective tools for managing pests and maintaining soil fertility

Different crops have different nutrient requirements and affect soil balance differently. In rotating crops, the soil has time to replenish the nutrient that was used in the preceding year while a different nutrient is being used for a different crop.

Crop rotation is one of the most effective tools for managing pests and maintaining soil fertility. Pests feed on different crops, so when a crop is removed, the pest will likely die due to its preffered food source being removed. This means limited pesticides have to be used.

Richer soil and healthier plants also limits the growth of weeds due to crops taking the resources. This also limits chemicals needed in farming.

More labor is required in preparing fields for crop rotation (especially if the rotation is shorter), but less money on pesticdes, chemicals, fertilizers, soil, and to produce a crop in general is spent.
