MEDIEVAL MATH

LATERRENCE REED, JAMES POKORNOWSKI, SAM ADAMS, & SOLLY

MATH IN THE DARK AGES

  • Math in the dark ages was exclusively humanities
  • Was made difficult due the inefficient roman numeral system
  • Euclid, a greek, had his works translated to effect more people who lived then
  • Aside from a few people, not much was done mathematically during this time.

MATHEMATICAL ADVANCES

  • Robert of Chester's book on algebra
  • The printing press helps spread ideas
  • Fibonacci creates the Fibonacci sequence
  • Fibonacci also helped spread the better Hindu Arabic numeral system
  • Nicole Oresme discovered rectangular graphing of speed amd distance

MORE ON FIBONACCI

  • Wrote "Liber Abaci" on calculation
  • Discovered the Fibonacci sequence while studying mating rabbit
  • With his sequence he studied the exponentivity of the rabbits
  • Also, he would divide the numbers in the sequence
  • He noted that as he did this they approached a single number, 1.618033

LATICCE MULTIPLICATION

  • This is a for of multiplication based on addition
  • The foundation of the method is using a grid
  • This grid contains diagonal lines through 4 squares
  • While this method is effective, it is also time consuming
  • Today, it is commonly taught in schools as a foundation for multiplication

NICOLE ORESME

  • A french mathematician who is widely unknown
  • He found a method of rectangular coordinates
  • He used this method to use time/speed graphs
  • He also played a large part in separating trig. From astronomy
