PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Chapter 5: Elements Compounds and Mixtures
What Are Some Elements?
An element is a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
Pure Substances
A substance in which all of the building-block particles are identical. For elements, the building-block particles are called atoms and are much too small for us to see with our naked eye.
Compounds
A pure substance of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances. No chemical change happens when a mixture is made. If you have a mixture of a physical change, the identities do not change.
Metals and Nonmetals
Metals are, and conduct heat and electric currents.
Nonmetals make up the second category of elements. They do not conduct heat, or electrical currents, and solid nonmetals are dull in appearance.
Metalloids
Metalloids have properties of both metals and nonmetals, make up the last category. Some metalloids, but not all, conduct heat or electric currents.
Solution, Solute, and Solvent
A solution is a homogeneous mixture that appears to be a single substance. The solute is the substance that is dissolved. The solvent is the substance in which the solute is dissolve.
