AVERAGE - 15 YEARS & A HALF

HABITAT

  • may be found in numbers in fresh and saltwater marshes, mangrove swamps, flooded meadows, lake edges, or shorelines.
  • are adaptable and may be seen in heavily developed areas as long as they hold bodies of water bearing fish.

DIET

  • small fish
  • Shrimp
  • Crabs
  • Aquatic insects
  • Rodents

NATURAL PREDATORS

  • Hawks
  • Bears
  • Raccoons
  • Especially while trying to steal their eggs

Why is this animal considered a keystone species?

  • Increase human activities where they live.
  • Is on the British Columbia Blue list of "Species at Risk"
  • Influences humans to take action and finding programs in the protection of birds.
