  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

What do the words and phrases do in the poem?

  • Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot.

Reading Poetry Out Loud

Today's Agenda

  • Select a poetry book with your partner (5 minutes)
  • Choose a poem to read out loud (5 minutes)
  • Have copies made
  • Read the poem, talk about it (10 minutes)
  • Divide up the lines; highlight yours (10 minutes)
  • After you practice reading it, find a teacher and perform your reading! (5 minutes).
